The Modernize Anime’ of Stylish

by: Maridel E. Castillo

             “Makagaan ug feeling”

As one of the students of USeP, expresses her feeling every time she saw an abstract, moving object, still life and all the flash characters that come out of her mind. A girl with her eyeglasses and who always bring a pencil has a hidden talent in drawing.

The Astounding Version

She is my classmate as well as my ludicrous seatmate. Her name is Danica D. Magallanes, a third year college student. She loves to draw in such a way that it is only her transition from melancholic world to enthusiastic heartstrings. She draws a lot of Disney Princesses and imagining herself in the scene that she is in the huge crystallize melodious palace when Cinderella left her precious silver sandal in the wide thin stairs. Furthermore, she loves to draw unsymmetrical cartoon characters just like Luffy, in One Piece, he has bulky eyes but small head, another is Mr. Bean, and he has a wide long nose and large ears but then she said, “It makes me feel alive, impress and engrave to draw uneven characters. Her hobby amazed me because she is not merely draws but she gave attachment and invents and composes a story behind what she draws. One of her works has a theme “How to become a healthy kid?” In the illustration, she draws a lanky boy who is lack of vitamins, proteins that made him weak and sketch a ladder that has four steps with its subsequent label, the go, grow, and glow foods. Danica directs that if the boy wants to become a healthy kid he must take the challenge to reach the three steps in order to be a successful healthy kid in which the last step shows, hygienic, salubrious, snappy and smart kid.

Danica’s Brainwave

“Na inspired ko sa akong papa” says Danica. Her father’s expertise influenced her to do the same, drawing, drafting and invents techniques. The techniques that she invented will be a great help and guide to straightforwardly construct the image. First and foremost, she sketch and form the shape followed by the major details that can be found in the face and minor details. “That’s how meticulous creations of Danica is” commented by Jhessa. To give magic in her works and to her artistic creations must have a strong internalization and wide experiences about artworks in which it is tastefully seen what the drawing is all about.

Hence, to be an artist is not that easy. As on the middle of her journey in life, she bears in mind that, it is not only the finished product is the most essential but it also determines meaning beyond the imagery. Every artist expresses themselves in different ways. There works may seems to be out of the blue but underneath of it is an enchanting magical story. An artist is not just like sketching, holding a paint brush and craving woods or stones. We are all artists in our own way, you just have to discover yourself. Do you want be one of them?

Living life with Arts

by: Sheena Marie Solis

A little lady with a creative hands who loves to write, to draw, and make arts out of nothing. She usually called by her nickname as “Lel”. She is currently living at Prk. Ising, Carmen, Davao del Norte and was born on October 14, 1994. She spent most of the time in writing, drawing and lettering. The little lady with a creative hand is none other than Ms. Orcelly Lucero Anet, 20 years old, small, pretty and a talented one.

She was only four years old when her love in arts develop and grown as a tree. At first, she simply thinks that she was just playing and making a mess but who knows from a simple doodling arise an creative and artistic artist. It was proven when she joined the poster-making slogan during her Preschool days as she win and brings home the bacon. The shine in her hand continues and develop until she reached her 1st year High school at Carmen, Davao del Norte where she always joined in every poster-making slogan with the help of her mentor Sir Felixito Jaballas, who is now in Japan. About her skills and talent, she always nominated and won as Secretary not only in their classroom but as a member of Supreme Student Government. Ever since she started doing her hobby, she had made not less than 200 artworks where she is fond. Some of her outputs include her first artwork when she was only five years old, the Fushigiyugi, an anime cartoon series. She had also draw Disney princesses, cartoon characters and sketches of herself. The love and passion she commit in her hobby makes her fulfilled, enjoyed and it molded her as a better artist.

At her spare time, she usually found in her room mostly under her bed just to avoid disturbance and keep away from household chores. She spent her time almost 4 hours from 7 pm to 11 pm in doing her hobby and when she feels empty stomach, she just asked her younger sister “Hazel” to brought her dinner in exchange of her allowance. For some reason, the main reason of hiding herself under her bed is to make or draw cartoons images or writing the name of her crush in her notebooks, papers, walls of her room and on her hands and legs as she think it as a tattoo. As I asked her how she feels while doing it, she response “kiligon man gud ko kung mahuna-hunaan nku siya og para pud motatak siya sa akong kinabuhi”, corny but sweet.

Her love in her hobby continues and blooms as when she found her man “Ads”, who loves music. Ads is fond of composing songs and sings well that causes Orcelly to fell in love with him. She once dedicated a song composed by Ads similar to the tune of one of Silent Sanctuary hits. At that time, she concluded “bagayon kayo mi kay hawd siya mocompose og song og ako ang tigsulat o gina rewrite nku iyang composition sa papel”. Her artistic way of writing adds a factor in loving her seriously, as they reached 3 years of in a relationship.

Unfortunately, they aren’t blessed with a successful conclusion as they broke up last January 2015. After all, she still believe that she may not have an happy ending in love, but surely her love in Arts stays forever.

Man’s Best friend

by: Janine Marie Lenizo

Long time ago in a village of Santa Felomina, Asuncion Davao del Norte, the Solis family brought to life a caring, loving and simple girl named Sheena Marie. Sheena grows fast and show responsibility to anything. At her developing stage she played anything that a common girl has, like, acting a family, cooking sets, and dolls. But showing kindness and valuing the little God’s gift, she can say she can handle anything.

When she is in her elementary days, her father Charito brought a puppy and he allow her to carry the little pooch and that time she start loving and fond in animals especially dog.

Pamela is an “AsPin” or Asong Pinoy, she was the first dog that Sheena has. Pamela lives in Solis residence almost 3 years and blessed with 14 puppies in all. Sheena loves taking care of her pets and always volunteer to take them a bath, dry them and “usahay gapangita pud ko og pulgas nila” Sheena said. Sheena loves her pet dog always around because she think that she is a mother to them. She feels relax and she enjoy playing with her pets. Sometimes when she feels stressed and drained at school she immediately go home and played with them. There are so much experienced and moment Sheena had with her hobby.

with her dog

There was a time that she owned an unusual dog because she think that dog is different from other dog. They named him “boy butong”. “Boy butong” just like Pamela an “AsPin” or “Asong Pinoy”. The name “boy butong” was created because the dog is always bringing a “bunot” or coconut shrub then he will tattered it into pieces.  They laughed about the idea of naming the dog “boy butong” because the dog is actually like the “bunot” not the fresh coconut shrub or “butong” but Sheena insist that and the dog name the latter.

In her 18 years of existence, in a dog only she cried almost a week. She was aloof by their neighbors because of the incidents that breaks her heart. And that time when she noticed that “boy butong” act differently. He chase their chicks, bark at her father sturdily and sometimes he attempt to bit their neighbor. And that reason their neighbor hit “boy butong” to death. She was very down that they killed her dog nastily.

Sheena was a 3rd year Bachelor of Elementary Education student at University of Southeastern Philippines. A simple yet gifted with real beauty adores and loves their pets unconditionally. Her dogs can grow to love her just as much as she loves them. I asked her why she do this but I observed her behavior, her emotional feeling and care to her dogs is an answer to my question. Because dogs like humans, they are gregarious animals, and love is an important emotion in a sociable species.

She said “dogs is always man’s best friend” “when you show your love and care to them in return they will serve you as if you are only their master”. She adds when I asked her how will she manage the time when she at school and taking care of her pets, ”even if I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had the time to give my dog the attention they deserves, they’re still madly waiting for me to come home. They doesn’t care if I have a pimples, got low scores, dumped, or made a really bad day. All they wants is me, my presence. They will loves you unconditionally. And that, my friends, is the ultimate reason why you should love dogs.”

“Cooking is love made visible”

by Danica Magallanes

“A recipe has no soul, you as a cook must bring soul to the recipe”.

This is the favorite quote uttered by a nineteen year old girl, Jhessa Senados whose heart was wrapped by her passion in cooking. Pouring her heart wholly motivates this young girl to continue her hobby as she puts her inspirations in every dish she cook.

Cooking as her hobby in a day to day life became her habitual drug. She was truly deep in love of eating, the reason why cooking became her hobby from the delicious adobo, tinola, and to the mouthwatering chicken curry and chicken cordon brue as her specialty. Even though she had almost cooked everything but there is one thing she doesn’t like to cook. It is a limbless cold-blooded vertebrate animal with gills and fins and living wholly in water, literally a fish. For her, the momentum of deboning and cleaning the fish before cooking really leave a mark of a strong smelly odor that passes through her nose going to her lungs, making her to feel awful and dizzy. A forceful statement from her that never in her whole life she will cook fish again. This is the reason why through years, this young girl avoided to cook any recipe including fish or the fish itself. This was the reason that imprisoned her to the four walled kitchen room leaving her with limitations and boundaries in cooking. When the time her dad was diagnosed with a certain illness, the breeze of the air change. When her father, Efren Senados wished if Jhessa can make a recipe of fish for him, in no doubts, a girl known as the fish hater gave her best in cooking the best recipe of fish she could have. Perseverance and effort was used as ingredients as she cooked the best fish soup in the whole world. This was the turning point of Jhessa in loving how to cook fish and loving the passion of cooking making her dad as one of the influential person who inspired Jhessa a lot.

While she is cooking

The things that Jhessa had learned from her experiences became her stepping stone to put her heart wholly in cooking. That weakness that hinders her turns into her strength that pushed her to enter the world of business. From an ordinary girl to a business minded one. Establishing a confidence cooking and selling foods like yema, mani, sampalok and many others lead this girl to enhance her hobby. This is the result of the undying influence of her father that has strong impact to her life. A lifetime words of wisdom to be cherished through the love of a daughter and father relationship they have.

This is no ordinary hobby if you yourself know how to love and accept it as a whole. Learn to appreciate, improve and be positive on what things you are doing because you don’t know someday your hobby may lead you to success.

Aphrodite's Best Shot

by: Jayson Ruales

“I want to use the last shot of my camera to my family and to the people I love,” she answered my question with hope and a little bit sadness on her face. “Why you are fond of taking pictures?” I asked. She answered, “because I find it fun and it makes everything in this world possible.” This woman arose my emotion and spirit as the interview went on.

Her personality

Charlotte Jalon is very family devotee. She’s dying to see her family suffers. She cannot able to see them in pain, if she can; she will shoulder their pain for it is better for her to suffer than her love ones. In short, she loves her parents more than her life. There’s nothing she will not do for them. She can even move the Mt. Everest just to make sure they are secured and happy. She will give everything to her family though nothing will be left for her. Her father, Mr. Claudio Jalon, is working as Civil Security Unit Personnel (CSUP) at Davao del Sur. His hardship is for his family, to send his children to school and to provide their needs. Her mother, Elsa Jalon, is her model as a woman because she can reach the stars for her children. Charlotte treasured all the hardships of her parents, thus, she promised when she left home for study that she will be back with a key to the door of prosperity. Because of it, I named her Aphrodite of USEP because of her priceless and genuine love to her family and love ones that no one can measure.

Intelligence? Beauty? Humor? Affection? Well, she got these all. She has a magnet that attracts every Hercules that she meets. Her eyes are like a fire that can burn every man’s heart. She has an angelic face that no one would wish to take off their eyes from it. Who can tell that Aphrodite is currently studying in USEP taking up Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education? And take note, she is my classmate, well, just my seatmate. Yeah! She is sitting beside me EVERYDAY.

Charlotte and I

All you know that Aphrodite is just a goddess of love and quite beautiful but don’t you, let me tell you something. This goddess has hidden face personality. Guess what? Ask her something like how many people died and survived in the Titanic tragedy and she will probably answer, “Ning uban unta ka para naihap nimo.” Yes! She has sense of humor, a beautiful philosopher. She can destroy your jaw through her antics and “havey” jokes like “Mahal ka niya. Mahal mo siya pero mas mahal ang tuition fee kaya mag-aral ka muna.”

Aphrodite as Photography Lover

“Wow! Nice picture-ran oh!” and she took her camera and captured the fascinating light blue reflection of the crystal-like ocean of Dahikan beach at Dahikan, Mati City. She cannot help herself to take a picture of amazing nature sightings wherever she goes. Nature is part of her life, thus, she loves to capture its beauty. Wow! Aphrodite is a nature lover. The day is not complete without even a single shot of her camera. She loves to capture the people who are significant to her. The funny trips done by her classmates as well as their up and down moments are not exempted by the lens of her camera. I have been a victim of her trip as well. As a humorous and mischievous woman, she loves to do it. It was first year college when she started to take pictures. No one influenced her to do it but it’s an innate urge. She feels heaven with overflowing grace pours down her spirit everytime she takes picture. Excited with pleasure in her heart everytime she presses the button of the camera for a shot because she knows there’s something she can look back after ten years. She wants to see the changes of her life through the pictures.

Happenings in Her Life that She Want To Capture

Crying in the rain while the song “Somewhere down the road” instrumental version played , that was her drama when she left home to move in Tagum City for study. She wants to capture that event because it was her first time to be away from her family that long.

When she was 17 years old, her mother left them for no reason that made her world trembled. If she will be given a chance to talk with her mother, she wants to ask her why she left them. She wants to know the story behind it.

If she can grab back the birthday celebration of her father and younger brother last November 22, 2011, she will because it was the first time since she moved in Tagum City that they gathered all together. They talked a lot, laughed together, throwing jokes, and what she liked the most that time was she could see how happy her father was. She’s hoping to make the gathering happen again.

During her father's birthday celebration

Who can tell that a beautiful, goddess, smart, brave, and loving Aphrodite has imperfect life despite of her perfect appearance? She is living that has ups and downs as what we all have. All we know she’s brave and loving woman but now, we knew how she became that one, I’m happy to tell the untold story of Aphrodite’s life. I’m proud that I was given a chance to look at her inner beauty that no one abled to do.

Adobo: Sprinkled with Love

by: Orcely Anet

simple woman blessed with stunning curly hair was a kind, loving and responsible maiden who loves to cook, make a man fall in her trick to be madly crazy in love.

Janine Marie Lenizo

This simple girl is a shy type woman who is afraid of socializing particularly when she have to ask something, this attitude leads toward cooking on her own by just merely observing to her mother, and then she created her own original version of Adobo.

Her Adobo has its own magic to make her man more inlove because it’s added with ginger which make the Adobo boosts the aroma, vinegar which the taste improved. It seems like “Paksiw” as she said. Nevertheless, you cannot say that it is ordinary, because every time that she cooks she always sprinkled it with love.  She can’t forget the moment when his man first tasted her Adobo, his face cannot be read nor predict and then suddenly smiled at her and said, “You’ll be a good wife, so let’s get married?” This unforgettable experience keeps her smiling the way she remembered. She knew that it was a joke, but her still hope that there is a truth behind that joke, because she is willing to marry her man in a right time. In addition, her man connotes that her adobo is related to her beauty, sweet and sour as she is. Her skin might like color of adobo, but you can’t deny and can’t resist tasting it and treasure the hidden beauty behind the color. Now, they are almost five years in a relationship and more stronger than ever. Her hobby brings a lot of happiness and while doing it her boyfriend never hinders but loves it.

While cooking Adobo

“You win the heart of your man through his stomach”, a meaningful message from her with a corresponding explanation that if you’re good in cooking, the more is the man stick on you, because not only your heart is full but also your stomach. When the time a person get marry are we need to cook for survival? Love is useless if you’re living with hungriness. Do you think love still work?

“Doodle World”

by: Charlotte Jalon

“You can be what you want to become.” In a world where you can be a protagonist or antagonist. Where you can create your own story, and to create a perfect picture of it. “I find myself free to express what I feel in my world, doodling,” Miss Pearllies Maglasang said. A daughter of Mrs. Liza and Mr. Patricio Maglasang born on August 24, 1995, eldest of the four siblings and a  third year student in the University of Southeastern Philippines taking up Bachelor in Elementary Education finds entering the university as her greatest achievement so far.

Life for her is typically not easy, and it’s up to you if you will mind it. Instead of day dreaming, she gets her pen and a piece of paper and starts to create vague patterns. This is how she lives in her doodle world, spends her spare time doing artistic doodles. She made to relate her doodles with that saying whenever she feels sad or happy, she always make artistic doodles. Miss Pearllies finds her hobby “doodling” fun, interesting, and mind cracking. She starts doodling when she was on second year college. Maybe she had wasted a lot of scratch paper for that, I guess. She was influenced by the three cool video doodle tutorials that she have. She always looks at her videos before she starts drawing her doodles. She often makes doodles once a week every Mondays at 8:30 in the evening most of the time. She has 20 artistic doodles in all. She has made 15 doodles on her happy moments some of it are about nature and minions and 5 doodles on her sad times and most of it focused on dull things dark shapes and figures surrounded by a bunch of blackish clouds. When she’s happy, it served as her recreational activity and it’s her pain reliever when she’s sad or angry. She keeps all of it in her study room.  She always looks at it every time she feels lonely and whenever she feels bored. “This keeps me away from reality even just for a while,” She said.

January 5, 2013 at exactly 8:30 in the evening when Miss Pearllies crave to draw her first ever artistic doodle. “Universe” which she chose as a theme its planets, stars, and a jet plane are the first doodle that she has made. She draws it in a book at the back page of her thick green module book in Filipino. “I just want to fill the empty space of this back page,” She said. She finished it for about 30 minutes at exactly 9:00 in the evening. “It was awesome! The  universe that I’ve sketched  with its two planets namely the Earth and the Mercury the Earth is more bigger than the Mercury  it’s size is like a Ping-Pong ball and probably  the size of the mercury  is like a five peso coin it is surrounded with  30 tiny as a keypad of your cellphone stars and a cool high-tech huge glass designed   jet plane  that is  three inches  taller than the Earth designed for only five persons   with six metal covered with glass shiny windows  and the  glass door is on the upper part of the plane  placed  at the center of the two planets and  of course with  a tall, long  curly hair in a ponytail,   and a beautiful  smiling woman  wearing all black sleeves and pants that covers her whole  sexy body facing at the Earth at the third window from the right  inside the plane is the pilot. “I find it very cool and artistic because it somehow relief the stress that I felt,” she said.

“I will draw the ecosystem with my family,” she answered me smiling and teary eyed   when I asked her that if she will only have one sketch paper left in her entire life who or what she will sketch for her last doodle? And when I asked her why? She said “I always wanted to have a happy and healthy life with my family and loved ones in a healthy environment. As I interviewed this woman, I find her very artistic, loving, and caring not just a daughter or a student but most of all as a person where she finds her ways to be what she wants to become in her world of “Doodles.”

A man who acclaims himself as a “Naruto Addict”

by: Pearllies Maglasang

“Naruto is not my life, rather it’s a part of my life, without it, I will never be whole”, this is how he express his adoration on Naruto where he watches over 396 episodes since his high school until the present.

Meeting with the most “handsome ninja”

As I walked in the round table where we supposed to meet, I can see a man seating there already. I can see his fetching face, his vibrant red collared shirt and his blue-white checkered shorts pair with his simple but obviously expensive sandals. Then, he turned his back looking at my direction and he welcomed me with his dazzling and alluring smile. I throw him back my sweetest and cutest smile to show my gratitude for spending his time with me.

He is a 21-year old bachelor from Katipunan, Madaum, Tagum City, Davao del Norte, Philippines. He is a happy and cheerful person as he sincerely and tactly answer my questions. The one that fascinated me about him is that behind those innocent and angel-like face and simple bachelor, he is an avid fan of anime specifically Naruto- a phenomenal anime in Japan which started to air in TV on 1993 and as of now, its popularity reached the seven continents. For that reason, it is one of the most watched anime around the world. Its story is still going and making people crazy about it and every avid fan of Naruto religiously waits for the latest episodes every Thursday and Fridays in Naruget.com/youtube. This young bachelor I’m talking about is Jayson Anguis Ruales, the most handsome ninja to watch for.

Jayson as a “Naruto Addict”

Did you know that this man even how buzy his student life is spends 30 minutes every day just to watch new episodes of Naruto, he is really a devotee?, Yes he is! His favorite line was “we are brothers, we have a unique bond, I will always be with you even if you do hate me… that is what big brothers are for” (Itachi said to his younger brother Sasuke) taken from his favorite episode when Itachi reveals the truth behind the Itachi clan’s massacre. “Maka-touch kaayu siya” Jayson with his teary eyes because he can sincerely relate for the reason that he has also a brother and sometimes he can imagine them as Itachi and Naruto. He highly consider himself as a “Naruto Addict” for he use to collect Naruto’s mini-statues, costumes like forehead protector, has thick collection of technique books for Shinobi/ Ninja as well as tapes  and videos. His favorite character was Sasuke for just like him,  he is very cool, mysterious and he has aims in his life. In contrast, he hates Madara because he is the master of all the pain and chaos in Shinobi/ Ninja world. If he will be given a chance, he will replace Madara because he will change the story and make Madara a cool character.

Forehead Protector

Nauto Miniature

Jayson’s turning point

As a result of his “healthy addiction” he sometimes copy the moves, dress styles of Sasuke- his favorite character, in this way he can feels like he is a  ninja in his world (Mad dreamer!) . He feels different emotions while watching Naruto like happiness, sadness, angry to the point that he wants to bust the monitor of the computer. He makes sure that he can watch the new episodes for if not, it will be heartbreak for him “Ah! Sakita kaayu oy! Tablahan pa ang gi-bulagan kog uyab!” he exclaimed. He chooses Naruto over thousands of animes for he learns lots of lessons like loving his country passionately and gives importance to everyone that surrounds him.

“I don’t consider Naruto as my life, but as part of my life wherein without it, it will never be whole” he said.

Disobedience is Not that Bad

by: Jhessa Senados

“I disobey my parents and continue my hobby.”

An unbelievable word that was thrown by an innocent girl who loves to stay in her chair and was swallowed by her silence. An ordinary girl whom you will not expect that she has this unique hobby. A kind girl who loves to play bandurria.

When a dawn came on October 26, 1995, a girl named Maridel Castillo was born. Her parents hug each other when they saw their cute little girl crying. For them, they are the luckiest person that time since they receive another beautiful gift. When she grew her parents sent her to school. Elementary days seems so easy to her. After surpassing it, she proceeded to high school at Tagum City National Comprehensive High School. This school became her stepping-stone towards her dream and her hobby. In this school she met bandurria.

Bandurria as her hobby

Bandurria was used in many Philippine folkloric songs. This instrument was used in orchestra of plucked string instrument called rondalla. Playing this instrument is the hobby of a hot-tempered yet shrinking violet lady named Maridel. Mrs. Lorna Mendoza is the one who introduce this 16 frets instrument to her. This short-necked instrument became an extension of Maridel’s emotion. When she’s on cloud nine, she plays pizazzy music and sad music when she’s blue. She wants to be an expert of this instrument the reason why she plays it every night after reading bible.

The parent’s voice

Maridel is banging away to master the said instrument but in the back of those sweats are the words of discouragements that she always received from her parents. They always reminded her to stop her craziness and focus to her study. Her parents doesn’t like the sound of bandurria the reason why the reason why they disappoint her. In contrast to it, as I let Maridel play her instrument she proves that it really washed away all the bad vibes. Back to Maridel, because of her perseverance she continues playing bandurria without the support of her parents.

Luckily, Maridel became a member of TCNCHS rondalla group. They joined many contests one of it is the Rondal-Awit 2012. They used the whole Christmas vacation for their practiced. Maridel was the only one who stays in their house since her family went to their province. Yes! She sacrifices her family just to pursue her hobby. When the competition came, all of her co-member was supported by their parents. Sad to say Maridel was the only one who went there. She felt pity to herself and jealous to others. Fortunately, Maridel and her group mates won the competition. She excitedly went to their home to inform her parents that they championed the contest. Her parents hugged her and said, “Proud kaayo mi sa imo nak. Sukad karon suportaan naka namo.”
Obedience is an act of faith; disobedience is the result of unbelief. Disobeying someone is not bad at all. As long as you have the valid reason why you did not follow them, then we can consider that as a good decision. Like Maridel, because of not following her parents and believing that she can do it alone, she became a member of rondalla and joined many contest. And because of her disobedience she make her parents proud.
